Guam Community College is a multifaceted public vocational educational institution, created by Public Law 14-77 in 1977. The intent of the legislation that created the College was to strengthen and consolidate vocational education on Guam. The College has done this throughout its existence in a number of ways. It has operated secondary and post-secondary vocational programs, adult and continuing education, community education, and short-term, specialized training. These programs have been delivered both on and off-campus, in satellite programs, and on-site at businesses as needed. Finally, the College has served as the State Board of Control for vocational education under the United States Vocational Education Act of 1946, 1963, and subsequent amendments. The College offers over 50 courses of study that are job related, including preparation for a wide range of occupations requiring less than a bachelor's degree. The College also offers courses of study to prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities with advanced standing in professional and technical degree programs. Also offered are a variety of community service and special programs, including but not limited to, English-as-a-Second Language, Adult Basic Education, General Education Development preparation and testing, and an Adult High School Diploma program.
The College's philosophy is to provide each and every individual seeking education at the College the opportunity to develop his or her greatest potential by offering the following:
The College recognizes its role in the economic prosperity of the community, seeking to be a proactive force in the commercial vigor of the region. This role is accomplished by maintaining communication with employers and by staying abreast of business trends so that its goals correspond with the predominant training needs of the region. The College develops new and innovative educational programs as they are needed. As a member of Guam's multi-ethnic community, the College functions in a culturally sensitive manner, adapting itself to meet the needs of its students, respecting the traditions of the many cultures represented on Guam. Further, the College enhances the quality of life in the community by offering community education, fostering career awareness, and providing an array of services for unique groups within the community's population. Finally, the College strives to serve its community with standards of excellence. Curricula are developed to meet the employers' criteria for successful employees. Through planning and self-review, the College continues its growth and development, aspiring to the highest level of performance.
"Our mission as a unique community college is to be Guam's lead education agency in training, education, and support services in all ways relating to Guam's workforce development needs and the career and employment goals of the people; and to work in partnership with industry to advance economic development in Guam as a regional focal point for Micronesia within the Asia-Pacific Rim. Our mission is human resource development in support of Guam's major social and economic development goals."
The College's present campus includes 25 main buildings on a 22-acre site. These buildings include concrete or partial-concrete structures, pre-engineered metal buildings, and temporary wooden structures. Standard classroom facilities are housed in both permanent concrete and temporary wooden structures. Metal buildings are used primarily for vocational shop facilities. The College is engaged in an on-going program to renovate and upgrade its facilities. A 64-unit student housing facility broke ground in June of 2000. In 1992, the GCC Foundation Building was completed. This two-story pre-engineered metal building houses a new library on its second floor. Special facilities are provided for most occupational programs. Shop spaces are provided for Auto Mechanics and Auto Body programs. Special laboratories are used for instruction in the Allied Health, Computer Science, Office Administration, Electronics Engineering Technology, Civil and Architectural Engineering Technology, and the Hospitality/Tourism programs. The Achievement Resource Center provides developmental instruction in mathematics and language arts. The College faculty is well qualified by their education and experience to offer courses which achieve the objectives of the College. Fall 2000 semester, the faculty numbered 94 full-time instructors and 241 part-time instructors. Both full-time and part-time instructors teach in all programs at the College, during the day as well as in the afternoon and evening and on weekends. The College and its faculty are committed to quality teaching.
