ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN OFFICE TECHNOLOGY

The student may choose one of two career paths: executive or medical secretary. Upon completion of either option, the student will be able to perform in a variety of office applications, including oral and written communication, formatting simple to complex business correspondence, formatting reports, tables and administrative documents, filing, operating computers and business machines, using computer software application programs, distributing mail, answering the telephone, and providing good customer service.

CERTIFICATE IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS

The Information Systems certificate program is a response to industry's expressed need for entry-level employees able to operate and understand today's information-based technologies. Because of the structure of the program, Information Systems will provide students with skills that may be acquired in short periods of time, which allows for early exit upon completion of competencies.

CS151

WINDOWS APPLICATIONS (3)

The purpose of the course is to teach students the fundamental nature of microcomputers: the hardware devices that make up the physical machine, the operating systems, and the major types of application software. Students are exposed to the concepts and applications of the word processing, graphics, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, database, and communications software. They are shown the far-reaching effects of computers and technology, and the applications that computers have to their own lives. Finally, the course provides students hands-on experience with "real-world" applications using the Windows environment and the application software for Windows: Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Database. Prerequisite: OA101, or OA120, or permission.

PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICS (3)

This course is designed to give the student an understanding of the basic principles of economics, how to apply these principles, and how these principles relate to the American free enterprise system.

FRESHMAN ENGLISH (3)

A course involves extensive writing of sentences, paragraphs, and essays and an in-depth study of nonfiction prose at the college level of comprehension. Prerequisite: Completion of EN100 Fundamentals of English Reading and Writing or passing score on English Placement Test.


EN194

TECHNICAL REPORT WRITING (3)

A Course to prepare students to write for business, industry, and professions. Students will engage in the writing and speaking process and will develop examples of technical "products" including letters, memos, formal reports, interviews, and oral presentations. Prerequisite: EN110 or equivalent.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS (3)

This course provides students with he opportunities to develop interpersonal skills that are necessary for professional and personal growth, and for managing conflicts with coworkers and supervisors. Employers have found that successful employees need people skills, such as the ability to cooperate with others, to communicate effectively, and to manage conflicts with coworkers and supervisors as well as technical skills. Interpersonal Relations develops the people skills necessary to increase productivity and advance in one's career.

FUNDAMENTALS OF BOOKKEEPING/ACCOUNTING (3)

This course covers accounting principles to include interpreting source documents, analyzing business transactions; recording entries in a general journal; posting to the ledger; preparing the work sheet with adjustments; journalizing adjusting and closing entries; preparing financial statements, and the post-closing trial balance. Prerequisite: OA104 or permission.

INTRODUCTION TO PC SYSTEMS INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE (4)

This is an introductory course on microcomputer systems installation and maintenance. It is designed to provide a working knowledge of MSDOS and to give the students the knowledge and skills necessary to get a system up and running and to perform memory and peripheral upgrades. Also, demonstrations and hands-on experience in routine maintenance will be given. The course will use IBM compatible hardware.

CUSTOMER SERVICE (3)

This course will provide methods and procedures to service the "Customer" relationship, which is the backbone of the tour and travel agencies. Types of customers, their specific needs, handling complaints and objections, and the maintenance of these relationships will be examined.

BUSINESS LAW APPLICATION (3)

This course is an introduction to the substantive law that governs American commerce. Specific legal disciplines presented include: contracts, agency, partnership, corporations, real and personal property, sales, commercial paper, and secured transactions. The traditional form of the law as well as the modern statutory modifications are presented. This course is for people studying business related disciplines and anyone interested in the legal under pinning of business activities.

INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL ASSISTING (3)

This course provides an introduction to the Medical Assisting program. The roles of the Medical Assistant in the patient care facilities are defined as well as fundamental administrative and clinical concepts and skills. Prerequisite: Admission to the Medical Assisting Program or permission

ADMINISTRATIVE MEDICAL ASSISTING I (2)

This course provides the student with the theoretical concepts and principles of medical office practices and procedures in the clinics and/or physician's office. The students are taught the basic skills necessary for "entry-level" proficiency in the performance of duties in the administrative or front office. Prerequisite: Admission to the Medical Assisting Program or permission.

MEDICAL LAW AND ETHICS (2)

This course teaches legal and ethical responsibilities in patient care and management, laws pertaining to medical practice and medical assistants and application of medical ethics in the performance of duties. Prerequisites: MS120, MS140.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (1)

This course provides the student with the elements of medical terminology. The study includes origins of medical terminology, word building system, specific terminology for all systems of the human body, and terminology related or applicable to specialty areas in medical and selected paramedical fields.

FIRST AID AND SAFETY (3)

This course provides students wit the basic knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to call for assistance and provide standard first aid care. This course also includes information on the prevention of injury and illness with a focus on personal safety.

INTRODUCTION TO STUDY OF DISEASES (1)

This course provides basic knowledge and understanding of the genetic and environmental factors causing diseases and responses of cells and tissues to injurious agents. Prerequisite: EN110, HL120, SI130.

ANATOMY & PHYSICS (3)

This course provides students with the basic knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human body and common pathophysiology. Prerequisite: EN110.

KEYBOARDING APPLICATIONS (3)

An introductory course in keyboarding. Focuses on the mastery of keyboarding and using correct typing techniques. Correct procedures in formatting simple centering, business letters and short reports will be emphasized.


OA103

FILING SYSTEMS (3)

This course offers basic principles and thorough study of business records control, filing procedures, records maintenance procedures, and records storage and control procedures. Four basic filing methods (alphabetic, numeric, subject, and geographic) will be emphasized. This course is only offered in fall semester.

BUSINESS MATHEMATICS/CALCULATING MACHINES (4)

The student has an opportunity to develop skills in the fundamental operations of the ten-key electronic calculator and perform business applications such as discounting, percentage, proration, depreciation, inventory, commissions, markup and payroll.

BASIC LAYOUT AND DESIGN FOR PRINT (2)

This course provides the foundation for computer-based design and layout of printed material. Students learn how to create and design exciting layouts with techniques used by professionals in the industry. It will appeal to entry &endash;level designers: teachers, office staff, artists or graphic artists. Prerequisite: CS152 or permission.

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS (3)

This course presents a contemporary view of the major elements in business today, such as international competition, marketing management, product pricing and distribution, labor management, and the role of service industries and small businesses. The student will gain knowledge to compete in today's business world.

KEYBOARDING FOR COMPUTERS (1)

Keyboarding for Computers is designed to teach the alphabetic and numeric keyboard and basic computer commands. Credit for this meets no degree or certificate requirements.

SPEEDBUILDING (1)

This is a 15 hour refresher course which will build speed and improve accuracy in keyboarding. Improved skills will be acquired through correct keyboarding techniques. A lab is available for completion of assignments. Credit for this course meets no degree or certificate requirements.


OA124

FORMATS (1)

This is a refresher course that will reinforce the students' existing skills in keyboarding. The course is intended for the student who wants a refresher course in letters, memos, reports and tables. Credit for this course meets no degree or certificate requirements.

INFORMATION PROCESSING (3)

In this course, the student will apply basic and advanced concepts in using the microcomputer for production of business correspondence, reports, business forms, tabulations, and other specialized documents. Competence in basic keyboarding skills and improvement in production, accuracy, and speed are stressed. Prerequisite: OA101 with a grade "C" or better, or permission.


OA206

BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCE (3)

Current trends in business correspondence with emphasis on writing various types of business letters and reports and improving listening skills, reading skills, and dictating skills. Letters of appreciation, resumes and interviewing will be covered. Prerequisites: OA101 & EN110.

PERSONNEL SUPERVISION (3)

The student will develop basic supervisory skills and develop a working understanding of management principles.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (3)

This course provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with database management software to create, develop, utilize, and apply initial programming skills and concepts. Upon successful completion of the course, student will have a greater understanding of database management and gain marketable skills that will improve their employment prospects. Prerequisite: CS150 or permission.

SPREADSHEET SYSTEMS (3)

Spreadsheets, their roles, advantages, and limitations will be explained. Microcomputer usage and standard spreadsheet software will be utilized to provide hands-on applications experience with creating, designing, setting up, utilizing, and integrating spreadsheets.

ADVANCED INFORMATION PROCESSING (3)

This course provides the student with a review of basic word processing skills and introduces advanced word processing skills, such as macros, merging techniques, graphic capabilities, sorting, fonts, page numbering, headers and footers, tables footnotes, newspaper and column formats.
Prerequisite: OA130 or permission.

MACHINE TRANSCRIPTION (3)

This course provides experience in transcribing legal and medical documents from dictation equipment. Legal transcription introduces legal terminology and covers the production of documents found in the legal office environment. Medical transcription introduces medical terminology and the production of documents found in medical offices. Emphasis is placed on development of accuracy, effective listening techniques, proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Prerequisites: OA130, EN110 with a grade of "C" or better, or permission.


OA250

OFFICE PROCEDURES (3)

This course prepares students for work in the modern office. Students will complete a variety of office tasks using business equipment, systems and procedures. The students will integrate previously acquired skills in keyboarding and will learn to: compose business correspondence, telephone procedures, time management, office mail, travel arrangements, records management, meeting and conference planning, office ethics, career planning, analysis case study and making decisions.
Prerequisites: EN110, OA101 or instructor permission.
