ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Automotive Technology incorporates high technology applications requiring specialized knowledge and skills of various automobile components.

Related occupations requiring automotive training include automotive parts persons, service order writers and service managers. Graduates of the Automotive Technology program can do further study in airframe and power plant mechanics in the aviation industry or automotive engineering in the automotive manufacturing industry.

EN100R FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH-READING (3)

This course is designed to meet the needs of those students scoring below 10.3 reading level on the placement test who need developmental work in reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills prior to entry into EN110. Prerequisite: Reading test score between 6.0 and 10.3.


EN110 FRESHMAN ENGLISH (3)

A course involves extensive writing of sentences, paragraphs, and essays and an in-depth study of nonfiction prose at the college level of comprehension. Prerequisite: Completion of EN100 Fundamentals of English Reading and Writing or passing score on English Placement Test.

PY125 INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS (3)

This course provides students with the opportunities to develop interpersonal skills that are necessary for professional and personal growth, and for managing conflicts with coworkers and supervisors. Employers have found that successful employees need people skills, such as the ability to cooperate with others, to communicate effectively, and to manage conflicts with coworkers and supervisors as well as technical skills. Interpersonal Relations develops the people skills necessary to increase productivity and advance in one's career.


MA100 FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS (3)

Students enrolled in MA100 work on an individualized, self-paced basis. Instructors provide class, small groups, and individualized instruction. Students will review the basic mathematical operations to development prerequisite skills for post secondary math courses. This course will be scheduled in the Academic Learning Lab where computer assisted instruction will include programs in math vocabulary, problem solving, and drill and practice exercises in basic operations. Prerequisite: Placement test.

MA105 COLLEGE MATHEMATICS (4)

This course is designed to provide students with basic mathematical skills needed in the trade and technical fields. Topics from multiple-operations with whole numbers to solving simple algebraic equations including data graphs will be covered. This course articulates with UOG's MA085 level I. Prerequisite: Placement test or satisfactory completion of MA100.


ME150A AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE 1 (3)

This is the first part of a two part basic course which covers about one-half of the tasks performed by a service station attendant including, but not limited to: checking and adjusting fluid and pressure levels; checking for excessive wear in hydraulic and mechanical systems; replacing and adjusting minor components.

ME150B AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE 2 (3)

This is the second half of a two part basic course; it continues with further work with minor testing, adjusting, and repairing of components in the hydraulic, mechanical, electrical and other systems of the automobile. Successful completion of the two part course provides the student with the skills to perform as a service station attendant.


ME161A INTRODUCTION TO AUTOBODY REPAIR (3)

This is an introductory course covering the basic concepts and practices in repairing damage to automobile bodies. Hand tools, power tools, materials, welding and their applications are stressed. Emphasis is on small dent repair and rust patching.

ME161B INTRODUCTION TO AUTOBODY PAINTING (3)

This is an introductory course covering the basic concepts and practices in partial and complete refinishing of autobody paint surfaces. Application and trouble shooting are stressed. Emphasis is placed on preparing the automobile for proper refinishing.


ME165 AUTOMOBILE BRAKE SYSTEMS (3)

This is an advanced course which covers automotive brake systems including drum/disc, hydraulic, combination valves, parking and power assist systems. Prerequisite: ME150A, ME150B.

ME166 STEERING AND SUSPENSION SYSTEMS (3)

This is a course designed to prepare the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE). Classroom and lab instruction will provide the student with the necessary skills to properly diagnose, adjust, repair, and replace all components in the automobile steering and suspension systems. Subjects covered are manual and power steering units, steering linkage, rack and pinion units, front and rear suspensions, McPherson Struts, and alignments.


ME167 AUTOMOBILE DRIVE TRAINS (3)

A course designed to prepare the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE). Content includes the diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of the clutch, manual transmission, drive shaft, and front and rear line axles.

ME168A AUTOMOBILE TRANSMISSIONS I (3)

The first of a two part course covering all on-car diagnosing, adjusting, replacing, and repairing of both domestic and foreign automatic transmissions. Successful completion of part I and II should lead to passing of the national certifying examination (ASE).


ME168B AUTOMOBILE TRANSMISSION II (3)

The second part of a two part course which is devoted to off-car repairs and includes complete rebuilding of a Ford, GM and Chrysler transmission. Satisfactory completion of parts I and II should allow the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE). Prerequisite: ME168A.

ME175 AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS (3)

A course designed to prepare the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE). Consists of about 1/3 classroom work and 2/3 hands-on work involving live and dead vehicles. Content covers diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of components of all electrical systems except ignition and includes the charging, starting, lighting, horn, wipers, and accessories circuits.


ME176 HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS (3)

The course is designed to prepare the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE) and covers the diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of all components of the system including the compressor, clutch, evaporator, receiver/drier, condenser, heater, defoggers, and radiators.

ME177A ENGINE TUNE-UP (NO FUEL OR EMISSIONS) (3)

This is the one part of a two part course that is designed to prepare the student to pass the tune-up section of the national certifying examination (ASE) on engine performance. Engine Tune Up can be taken before or after the second part or concurrently. Course content involved the diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of components in the ignition, charging, starting, and cooling systems as well as the valve train.


ME177B ENGINE & FUEL EMISSIONS SYSTEMS (3)

This is one part of a two-part course designed to prepare the student to pass the fuel and emissions section of the national certifying examination (ASE) on engine performance. The course can be taken before, after, or concurrently with tune-up. Content covers diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of components in the fuel and emission systems including carburetors, fuel pumps, tanks, PVC, EGR, AIR and exhaust.

ME178A GASOLINE ENGINE REPAIR I (3)

The first of a two part course designed to prepare the student to pass the external engine sections of the national certifying examination (ASE) on truck gasoline engine repair or gasoline engine repair. Content includes diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of external components of the engine including lubrication, cooling, ignition, fuel, exhaust, battery and starting systems.


ME178B GASOLINE ENGINE REPAIR II (3)

The second part of a two part course designed to prepare the student to pass the internal engine section of the national certifying examination (ASE) on gasoline engine repair or truck gasoline engine repair. Course content includes diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of all internal engine components including cylinder gear, valve train, and engine block. The truck section also contains diagnosis and repair of Emission Control Systems.

ME191 TRUCK BRAKES (3)

A course designed to prepare the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE) on truck brakes. Content includes the diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of components in pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.


ME192 TRUCK SUSPENSION AND STEERING (3)

Emphasis is on the preparation of the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE) on truck suspension and steering through classroom and shop experiences. Course content includes the diagnosis, adjustment, repair, and replacement of components in the suspension and steering system such as steering columns and gears, power steering linkage, wheel alignment, wheels and tires.

ME193 TRUCK DRIVE TRAINS (3)

This course is designed to prepare the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE) in truck drive trains. Course content includes theory as well as hands-on work relating to the diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of the components of the drive train such as clutch, transmission, driver shaft, and drive axle.


ME194 TRUCK ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS (3)

A course designed to prepare the student to pass the national certifying examination (ASE). Consists of about 1/3 classroom work and 2/3 hands-on work involving live and dead vehicles. Content covers diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of components of all electrical systems except ignition and includes the charging, starting, lighting, horn, wipers, and accessories circuits.

ME196A DIESEL ENGINE REPAIR I (3)

The first of a two part course covering the diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of components in the external systems of the diesel engine including colling, exhaust, induction, lubrication, fuel and electrical. Successful completion should prepare the student to pass this section of the national certifying examination (ASE) on truck diesel engines.


ME196B DIESEL ENGINE REPAIR II (3)

The second part of a two part course which covers the diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of components of the engine interior including the head, valve train, and block. This part is designed to prepare the student to pass this section of the national certifying examination (ASE) on truck diesel engine repair.


WE105 FUNDAMENTALS OF OXYACETYLENE WELDING AND CUTTING (3)

This course is designed for those students who have little or no oxyacetylene welding training. Units of study involved safety, equipment operation and the manipulative skills required to complete flat, vertical, horizontal an overhead brazing and welds. In addition, the cutting and shaping of structural and plate steel is taught.
