GCC receives $5,800 from Gannett Foundation for nursing equipment

Guam Community College received a $5,800 grant from the Gannett Foundation on Friday, June 4, for the purchase of nursing equipment for its new Anthony A. Leon Guerrero Allied Health Center. The Allied Health Center houses the college’s licensed practical nursing and medical assisting programs. The grant will allow GCC to purchase a new patient monitor and an adult-size manikin, to replace similar equipment that is over eight years old.

“We intend for our practical nursing students to graduate from GCC with the most technologically advanced training possible. This new equipment will enable us to provide that training, and we thank the Gannett Foundation for funding this opportunity for our students,” said GCC President Dr. Mary Okada.

GCC Nursing Director Louise Foster explained that the new manikin and monitor would provide students with more realistic patient situations in their lab work. “This more advanced equipment will replicate an actual hospital room and patient care. We can perform CPR on this manikin, intubate it, and simulate other life-saving procedures,” Foster said.

On hand for the check presentation were Joanne Ige, GCC Program Specialist/Grant Writer, Rindraty Limtiaco, PDN publisher, Dr. Mary Okada, GCC president, Lolita Reyes, GCC Asst. Director, Development & Alumni Relations, and Louise Foster, GCC nursing director.
